Things I learned today while at the St. Louis Zoo

It rained in St. Louis today.  Not the light drizzle that dampens your windshield just enough to smear the bug juice into a light, flaky crust the moment you turn on your wipers.  It was the kind of rain that hits your corneas even though you wear glasses.  The kind of rain that turns your hairspray into a polyurethane helmet on contact.

So, of course, my husband Randy and I decided to visit the St. Louis Zoo.  Armed with tiny travel umbrellas and only four hours of sleep the night before, we waded our way past the zoo’s many enclosures.  And as I walked with my husband, I began my incredible journey of learning.

For instance, I learned a very valuable fact about marriage . . . namely, that the amount of years a husband has been happily married to his wife dictates the amount of distance he must keep between them when they are on an outing together.

As you can see, as of today, we have been happily married for 27 years.

Walking twenty paces apart also enables the loving couple to test each other’s middle-aged hearing free of charge.

I also learned today that one can tell how long a couple has been married by whether or not the husband will carry his wife’s things while on an outing together.  When a couple has been married to each other longer than a decade, it is fairly common for the husband to be seen carrying his wife’s purse.  (Of course, a husband would need to make sure that he will be accompanied by his wife when he does this)

And in extreme cases, it has been known that the husband will carry his wife's PINK umbrella for her once it stops raining.

ALSO today, while at the St. Louis Zoo, I learned another fascinating fact.

I learned that wet hairspray seems to be an aphrodisiac to butterflies . . .

But by far, the most invaluable and fascinating lesson I had learned today while at the St. Louis zoo is this :

Seafood, anyone?

Seafood, anyone?

I hope that these lessons have been an invaluable aid and an inspiration.  Here’s to learning!

And here’s to you, Randy!
